1. Design A Focal Point:
In every space I design I love to create a focal point in the room that will naturally grab your attention. This can be anything from a feature wall, fireplace, window, or even some beautiful art work.

Once I've decided on my focal point, I then design the room based around that.

2. Avoid Matching Furniture Sets:
Add character to any room by pairing it with mixed tones or furniture that compliment one another.

3. Selecting Paint:
When selecting paint I actually first review my paint choices on Pinterest to see them in real rooms. I then narrow down my choices by testing my samples on the wall of the room that I will actually be painting.

This is an ideal way to get an accurate view of the colour and how it reacts with natural light in the room and our moods.

Because yes, the psychology behind colour theory is a real thing, tested and proven!

4. Artwork Placement:
Make sure that the size of the art work suits the space; a bigger wall needs a bigger piece of art unless you are designing a gallery wall.

In that case, when creating a gallery wall hang them 3-4" apart and 6-8" above your furniture for ideal placement.

5. Create Visual Symmetry:
When I say this... It doesn't mean that all the furniture in your room has to be symmetric.

Whether you're into a symmetric or asymmetric style, it is important to ensure that the space is well balanced to the visual eye. Which means not too much furniture cluttered in one space with one sad lonely chair or lamp in the opposite corner. The goal is to balance out the visual weight.

6. Follow The Rule Of 3:
Did you know things displayed in odd numbers naturally look better to the eye?

When it comes to decor and design three is the magic number! However, dependant on the area, some items can be broken into 3, 5, 7. For example, when styling a shelf, arrange a trio of candles in varying heights on the shelf, or place a stack of three oversized books.
